Corpus and Computational Linguistics

Code: ENGL317

Credits: 30

Semester: Semester 1

This module will equip students with up-to-date knowledge of theory and methods in Corpus Linguistics – a field of linguistics that uses computers to investigate and analyse large collections (corpora) of language data – and emphasises a practical, hands-on approach to building computational skills to analyse corpora.
The module is divided into two broad parts. Part 1 gives a practical grounding in the theory, methods, and tools integral to corpus linguistics research. Part 2 broadens the theoretical and methodological scope of the module to explore how corpus and computational linguistic methods have and can be applied in linguistic research (e.g. discourse analysis, forensic linguistics, sociolinguistics) and research in/across various topics (e.g. gender studies, health) and disciplines (e.g. media and communications, cyber security, sociology).
