Numerical Methods in Physics

Code: PHYS405

Credits: 15

Semester: Semester 1

The goal of this course is to provide a background in numerical methods relevant to current research. By the end of the course, students will have a good understanding of the main methods employed by astronomers to analyze data from observations and from computer simulations. They will also be able to appreciate the power of numerical modelling in understanding how different physical processes operate in galaxies, and how these numerical methods can be applied to other branches of Physics (orbital dynamics, fluid dynamics, dynamics of large systems). The students will also learn a few basic data science methods and apply them to the analysis of large data sets from astronomy.
