This module explores how multinational companies (MNCs) operate and compete across different countries and regions. Students examine how ‘the rules of the game’ – laws, politics, culture and wider institutions – shape business decisions in developed, emerging and developing economies. Through real company examples and country case studies, students compare how home, and host country environments influence where firms invest, how they expand into new markets, and how they build relationships with governments, partners and local communities. The module also introduces major international development challenges, including inequality and sustainability, and considers what responsible behaviour from global firms looks like in practice. By the end of the module, students will be able to analyse and explain why the same firm makes different choices in different parts of the world, and how this affects its strategy, performance and impact on society. This knowledge is valuable preparation for careers in international management, global consulting, policy analysis and development-focused roles.
