This module is designed for students preparing for careers across the research sector including academia, policy, and applied research environments, and provides a foundation for doctoral study and advanced research careers. It introduces the institutional and economic forces that shape modern universities and research-intensive organisations, and explores the motivations of different people within the wider research ecosystem.
Practical skill development focuses on three core elements of academic and professional research practice: journal articles, grant proposals, and oral presentations. Students develop critical skills in communicating research clearly, applying robust study design principles, and ensuring reproducibility and rigour, drawing on principles promoted by the UK Reproducibility Network and open science initiatives.
Assessment is based on coursework, including assignments and presentations, enabling students to demonstrate advanced academic and professional competencies.
