The module exposes students to the interface between heritage and sustainability issues. It focuses on dimensions of heritage (tangible vs intangible heritage, natural, built environment and cultural heritage assets, heritage at risk) and the consideration of heritage as a tool for sustainable development (resilience, circular economy, heritage governance, tourism, sustainability) in light of the climate crisis, multi-level governance structures, international development dichotomies and localised cultural considerations. This module provides a rich exploration of multi-scalar contexts of sustainability and how to navigate competing demands of culture, tourism and heritage.
