Chemistry for the Environment and Renewable Carbon: Integrating Sustainability and Technology

Code: CHEM308

Credits: 15

Semester: Semester 2

This module examines more sustainable renewable energy, chemicals and materials within the circular economy and how they can mitigate environmental pollution and climate change. Students will explore the circular economy and waste valorisation, the biorefinery concept, biosourcing in the chemical industry, biomass conversion, and the environmental impacts of chemicals, plastics, and industrialization. Topics include commercial bioproducts, microbial biorefining, CO2 and plastic waste valorisation and emerging pollutants. Through lectures and practical workshops, students will critically evaluate pollution control challenges and apply their knowledge to real-world and industrial solutions.
