This module introduces core inorganic, organic and physical chemistry concepts that are broadly related to understanding reaction mechanisms. The inorganic component looks at the chemistry of the main group elements, using the periodic table as the underpinning framework. The organic component introduces concepts of stereochemistry and the major reactions involving common functional groups. The physical component is centred around the use of chemical reaction kinetics to understand and control reaction mechanisms. Principles of sustainability and green chemistry introduced.
