This module offers an in-depth exploration of the ancient history and archaeology of Sicily, spanning the Iron Age through to the Hellenistic period. Situated at the crossroads of the Mediterranean, Sicily played a pivotal role in shaping the cultural, political, and economic dynamics of the ancient world. We will examine key transformations across these periods, using archaeological evidence, historical texts, and inscriptions to gain an understanding of the island’s rich history.
Key themes include the evidence for Iron Age societies, the settlement of Greeks, urbanisation and the development of Sicilian poleis. We will explore the political and social structures of the poleis, including the emergence of tyrannies, inter-city competition, and warfare.
Computer practical sessions will introduce you to digital tools and methods for analysing historical data, enabling you to develop practical skills essential for research in the digital humanities, and possibly for use in your dissertation. By the end of the module, you will be well-equipped to critically evaluate the sources and approaches used to reconstruct the rich and complex history of ancient Sicily.
