THE CULT OF POETRY: CALLIMACHUS AND BEYOND

Code: CLAH325

Credits: 15

Semester: Semester 1

The module gives an overview of the main genres and literary trends during the Hellenistic times, with a particular focus on post-Classical poetry. By analyzing the literary profile of Callimachus, his contemporaries, and his followers, the module explores a new critical approach to poetry. Inspired by local cults and history, and permeated with science and erudition, Hellenistic poetry challenges readers’ knowledge of ancient myths and literature, priding itself on wit and irony.
