The module provides an introduction to the main concepts of space-flight, starting with a description of the Solar System, the Earth and the Earth-Moon system. Kepler’s and Newtons laws are introduced, and there is brief discussion of their limitations. Fundamental equations of elementary orbital mechanics are derived, followed by their solutions which are applied to various problems. The other main topics are: Rocket performance, the Tsiolkovsky equation, and gravity loss; Rocket engine performance basics, including 1-D compressible-flow theory through the CD (“de Laval”) nozzle. Atmospheric entry and satellite drag.
