Personal Statement

James was awarded his MChem in 2004 from the University of Oxford and moved to Liverpool to complete his PhD studies on nucleic acid and oligonucleotide chemistry. In 2010, after a 2.5 year PDRA position, James joined the staff as a teaching lecturer and coordinates a variety of courses related to organic chemistry, synthetic chemistry, molecular biology for chemists and employability skills. James is a senior fellow of the HEA and a committee member of the Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC) Tertiary Education committee. In 2012, the RSC awarded James a Chemistry Education Activating Research bursary to travel to the Biennial Conference on Chemistry Education at Penn State University. Internal awards include: funds from the Benefactors Fund to introduce 128 ‘clicker’ devices that are routinely used by numerous staff (2010); employability skills development through the introduction of a peer review process (2015 Faculty of Science and Engineering Teaching and Learning award) and leading the development of a new coherent undergraduate health and safety process of all pre-research laboratory courses (2017 Faculty of Science and Engineering Teaching and Learning award; 2017 University Learning and Teaching Fellowship; 2018 Staff Award for Health, Safety and Wellbeing)
