About

Personal Statement

Helen graduated with a First Class BSc (Hons) Chemistry from the University of Liverpool in 2010. She then completed an interdisciplinary PhD across the Departments of Chemistry and Eye & Vision Science focused on drug delivery to the eye with Prof. Steve Rannard in collaboration with Dr Victoria Kearns and Prof. Rachel Williams. Helen became a postdoctoral research associate on projects within both departments, exploring ex vivo eye models and nanoemulsions. Finally she settled in the Department of Chemistry in 2017 to undertake research encompassing radiometric analysis of various polymeric drug delivery vehicles such as nanoparticles, micelles and emulsions within the Nanomedicine Research Partnership led by Prof. Rannard. Helen is now a Unilever Research Fellow within the Department of Chemistry and is based within the radiomaterials laboratory where she is radiation protection supervisor.

Helen received the ECR and Returners fund from UoL (Dec. 2017) to establish collaborations with Prof. Ryan Donnelly at Queen’s University Belfast and the School of Physical Sciences Post-Doctoral Development Award (Mar. 2018) to visit Aberdeen Radiation Protection Services. She has won multiple British Council/Royal Society of Chemistry funded places at UK-India Researcher Links Workshops and was the Chair of the UK Research Staff Association. In this capacity, and supported by The Academy, she founded and chaired UoL's Research Staff Association, a community owned and led initiative which provides support for research staff from across the University.
