Personal Statement

I joined the Centre for Innovation in Education in June 2023 after ten years of teaching in higher and secondary education. After completing my PhD in computational toxicology in 2010 and spending 3 years working in industry I moved into teaching during a post-doctoral contract at Liverpool John Moores University. Since then I have taught across a range of scientific and mathematical disciplines and led the generic science foundation year in my previous role at the University of Salford. Throughout my time teaching, I have had a keen interest in effective pedagogies, specifically on how and why pedagogy needs to adapt to specific cohorts and subjects. My current interests and specialisms focus on assessment and feedback. I believe constructive alignment is fundamental to course design, especially in HE, and that assessments need to test learning outcomes effectively. I am interested in designing assessments that allow all students to demonstrate what they have learnt through study. I am also interested in the power of comparison as an effective feedback strategy, in terms of both self and peer marking.
