About
Dr Steven Chen is a Lecturer (Assistant Professor) in Accounting at the University of Liverpool Management School, having previously worked as a Lecturer at Lancaster University Management School and as a Graduate Teaching Assistant at Alliance Manchester Business School.
Steven's primary research interests lie in the intersection between Capital Market Accounting Research and Corporate Sustainability. He is particularly interested in studying the role of non-financial stakeholders (e.g., human capital) and non-financial information in the capital markets. Steven's research has been published in internationally reputable (ABS 4/3 listed) journals, including the British Journal of Management, British Accounting Review, Journal of Business Research, Accounting Forum, International Review of Financial Analysis and European Journal of Finance. His work has won the Best Paper Award (PhD track) at the Journal of International Accounting Research (JIAR) Conference in 2024, the Best Full Paper Award by the British Academy of Management (BAM) in 2020, and the Best Doctoral Paper twice at Alliance Manchester Business School.
Steven also serves as an ad-hoc reviewer for internationally excellent journals and conferences, including the Journal of Business Finance & Accounting, Accounting and Business Research, Accounting Forum, British Accounting Review, Journal of Business Ethics, Journal of Business Research, Human Relations, Journal of International Accounting Research, AAA Annual Meeting and CAAA Annual Conference, amongst others. Steven is also a regular speaker at major international conferences, including the American Accounting Association (AAA), European Accounting Association (EAA), and Financial Management Association (FMA), Journal of International Accounting Research (JIAR) Conferences, amongst others. He is a member of AAA, CAAA, EAA, EFA, FMA, BAFA and BAM.
Steven earned his PhD in Accounting and Finance from Alliance Manchester Business School (AMBS), The University of Manchester, where he received the President's Doctoral Scholar Award and the AMBS PhD Scholarship. Before pursuing his PhD, he received his MSc with Distinction at King's College London. Steven is also a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (FHEA) and has served as an external examiner for Nova School of Business and Economics (Lisbon, Portugal) since 2023/24.
