About

Dr Steven Chen is a Senior Lecturer (Associate Professor) in Accounting at the University of Liverpool Management School (ULMS). Prior to joining Liverpool, he held a Lectureship in Accounting at Lancaster University Management School. He is currently a member of the Research and Impact Committee at ULMS and serves as Secretary and Treasurer of the British Academy of Management (BAM) Corporate Governance Special Interest Group.

Steven's primary research interests lie at the intersection between Capital Market Accounting Research and Corporate Sustainability. His work focuses on how non-financial stakeholders (e.g., employees) and non-financial information influence corporate decisions and the information environment of capital markets. His research has been published in internationally recognised journals (ABS 4/3 and ABDC A*/A) in accounting, finance, and management, including British Journal of Management, Journal of Banking and Finance, British Accounting Review, The International Journal of Accounting, International Business Review, and Journal of Business Research, among others.

Steven’s research has received funding from the British Academy and the UK Department for Science, Innovation and Technology (DSIT). His work has also been recognised through several research awards, including the Best Paper by an Early Career Researcher Award from International Business Review (2025), the Best Paper Award at the Journal of International Accounting Research Conference (2024), and the Best Full Paper Award (Financial Management Track) from the British Academy of Management (2020).

Steven also serves as an ad hoc reviewer for a range of internationally reputable journals, including the Journal of Business Finance & Accounting, Accounting and Business Research, British Accounting Review, Management Accounting Research, Accounting Forum, British Journal of Management, Journal of Business Ethics, Journal of Business Research, Corporate Governance: An International Review, Human Relations, European Journal of Finance, amongst others. He is also a regular speaker at major international conferences, including the American Accounting Association (AAA), European Accounting Association (EAA), and Financial Management Association (FMA).

Steven earned his PhD in Accounting and Finance from Alliance Manchester Business School (AMBS), The University of Manchester. He is also a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (FHEA) and has served as an external examiner at Nova School of Business and Economics (Lisbon, Portugal).
