MUSEUMS AND MONUMENTS

Code: HLAC206

Credits: 15

Semester: Semester 2

Both museums and monuments require management of all that is in their care, but also cater to a range of contemporary users. In this module we will consider display and public interpretation in museums and galleries on the one hand, and publicly accessible sites and monuments on the other. The course includes museum visits and practical assignments, grounded in theoretical and professional literature. We will examine current UK interpretation theories, policies and practices in an international comparative perspective. Heritage interpretation and display brings understanding of the past to peoples in the present, though what aspects of the past to reveal and emphasise can be highly political and controversial. We concentrate on current practice, but it also reflect on the selectivity of past heritage interpretation decisions as that has affected what is available today.
