Field-based Appraisal of Geothermal and Geostorage Sites

Code: SOES388

Credits: 15

Semester: Semester 2

This module explores how geological systems can be used for geothermal energy, carbon capture and sequestration, and hydrogen storage. Through hands-on workshops and fieldwork in Upper Palaeozoic and Mesozoic basins of North Wales and Northwest England, you will examine the subsurface properties (e.g. sedimentary architecture and porosity) that dictate the viability of these applications. You will use your field observations and published data to build predictive models and critically assess the potential of real geological basins. Assessment of the module will be by means of a poster and a report. The poster evaluates the suitability of one of the study basins for a selected application, and the report applies the same skills to assess the Wessex or Hampshire Basin.
