This module provides students with the core academic, digital and fieldwork skills required for success in Earth Science. Through lectures, workshops and tutorials, students develop academic writing, information literacy, exam preparation, and professional skills. Digital training in graphic design, spatial analysis, document and reference management, and 3D visualisation, will enable students to work confidently in digital environments and build competencies widely used in Earth Science-related employment. A major component of the module is hands-on field training in varied geological areas, where students practise recording observations, identifying rocks, constructing sedimentary logs, and interpreting geological structures and environments. Field data are used to build simple geological histories and produce short syntheses, mirroring professional approaches to geological data collection and interpretation. Tutorials support personal development planning and careers awareness. The module provides an essential foundation for subsequent Earth Science study. Assessment is entirely by coursework, comprising a hazard map, a field portfolio, and a group poster.
