Technical Studies 3

Code: ARCH345

Credits: 30

Semester: Whole Session

Technical Studies 3 consists of three nested subjects: Acoustics, Lighting and Active Environmental Design Systems (A), Integrated Technologies in Construction (B) and the Design Report (C).
From the perspective of user requirements, ‘Acoustics, Lighting and Active Environmental Design Systems’ introduces the design of environmental systems for large buildings, the selection of appropriate equipment and materials, and their integration into building fabric and structural systems. The focus is on aspects of artificial lighting, acoustics, and thermal environment.
‘Integrated Technologies in Construction’ develops an integrated understanding of structure, materials, construction, and building systems as core drivers of architectural design. Through case-based learning and design-led technical studies, carbon-informed decision-making, contemporary construction methods, and emerging technological paradigms are explored. Assessment focuses on the ability to critically evaluate and communicate technical design strategies within an architectural context.
The ’Design Report’ is a reflective exercise where a work of architecture is presented and critiqued through the lens of design practice and procurement, professionalism and ethics. The report invites reflection on issues including clients and stakeholders, site context, design approach, sustainability strategy, the legal framework as well as procurement and costs.
