Design Studio 3.2 consists of two connected subjects: Design Project 3.2 (A) and Material and Technical Strategies (B), which together develop and add depth to the urban design strategies researched and implemented in semester one (Design Studio 3.1).
The aim of ‘Design Project 3.2’ (A) is to investigate and analyse site and urban design factors to transform both public and private space through an advanced architectural design project. Analysis of appropriate theories and precedents relating to architectural and urban design should be used to inform the project. In developing and implementing a design brief, closer scrutiny should be made to architectural choices relating to fire and life safety, environmental, social and economic sustainability, spatial strategies, building character, structural strategies and detailed design. Architectural ideas should be presented coherently, by selecting and testing a range of representation methods.
As a development of the architectural design produced for ‘Design Project 3.2’ (A), the aim of ‘Material and Technical Strategies’ (B) is to advance parts of the project to a high level of technical detail. Focus will be on appropriate choices for structure, construction, building fabric and material qualities in the context of environmental sustainability and fire and life safety issues. These issues should also ensure that detailed design is considered in relation to high quality architecture and building character, particularly in relation to architectural agendas developed as part of the initial architectural design project produced for the module.
The module will be delivered using a combination of talks, design tutorials and reviews, followed by a summative design portfolio submission.
