Design Studio 3.1

Code: ARCH315

Credits: 30

Semester: Semester 1

Design Studio 3.1 consists of two connected subjects: Spatial Strategy (A) and Architectural Interfaces (B).
The aim of ‘Spatial Strategy’ (A) is to develop a critical reading and analysis of an existing site, for example, an urban block, infill block, street network, high street or urban centre/quarter, that addresses the relationship between people and their built environment. Urban theories and precedents in contexts past and present will be investigated for their impact on the contemporary environment, as well as an evaluation of human, environmental, social and economic sustainability choices to inform a creative and innovative urban design strategy. Emphasis is also placed on exploring, testing and developing the most appropriate representation strategies to communicate spatial strategies.
Based on the site analyses and strategic positions produced for the spatial strategy, the aim of ‘Architectural Interfaces’ (B) is to develop a brief for a design project and then research and design a complex building (or complex of buildings) that focusses on architectural issues. These should include an ability to mediate between different scales and parameters, account for the relationship between people, public/private thresholds, and the wider built/urban environment. Outcomes should also demonstrate a critique and testing of appropriate structural and material qualities, as well as demonstrating an understanding of environmental sustainability and fire and life safety issues.
The module will be delivered using a combination of design tutorials and reviews, specialist consultants, talks, and workshops, followed by a summative design portfolio submission.
