Design Studio 2.2 builds directly on the design explorations undertaken in Design Studio 2.1, advancing abilities to develop a coherent and technically informed architectural proposal, that interpret and translates a defined architectural brief. The module centres on the design of a building, or series of buildings of moderate complexity, within a defined urban context and schedule of accommodation. Students deepen their engagement with type, context, and urban morphology while refining strategies for public and private space, to produce a resolved architectural project. Greater emphasis is placed on detailed design development, including building envelope, structure, materiality, environmental performance, and life-safety integration. Demonstration of design development over the course of the project, as well as critical analysis of precedent studies and design context, will also contribute to the resolution of the architectural project.
The module will be delivered using a combination of design tutorials, workshops, talks and reviews, followed by a summative design portfolio submission.
