Design Studio 2.1 consists of two connected subjects: Design Communication 2.1 (A) and Design Project 2.1 (B).
The aim of ‘Design Communication 2.1’ (A) is to delve deeper and add breadth to skills introduced in Design Communication 1.1 and 1.2, introducing additional digital architectural representation and communication skills and techniques, as well as analysis tools.
‘Design Project 2.1’ (B) is an opportunity to test and develop skills and learning as outcomes of Design Studio 1.1 and 1.2 and introduces a greater level of complexity and depth in an architectural design brief. The module focuses on the design of a building, or series of buildings, within a defined context. Students will develop architectural proposals in response to a specific brief and schedule of accommodation, exploring the relationship between public and private space, type, context, and urban morphology. Emphasis is placed on the integration of structure, materiality, environmental sustainability, and life-safety considerations within a coherent architectural strategy. Design development, precedent study, and site analysis, will also contribute to the production of a resolved architectural project.
The module will be delivered using a combination of design tutorials, workshops, talks and reviews, followed by a summative design portfolio submission.
