Technical Studies 1 consists of three nested subjects: Environmental Design Principles (A), Building Technology Fundamentals (B) and Architecture and the Construction Industry (C).
‘Environmental Design Principles’ introduces the primary design strategies of climate-responsive architecture and fundamental solutions for low-carbon buildings. Students will understand passive design strategies in relation to local climatic conditions, thermal environments, and the integration of daylighting and shading. Further focus is placed on the application of passive solar systems and natural ventilation to optimize building performance.
‘Building Technology Fundamentals’ introduces the basic concepts of structure, construction, and building systems as core drivers of architectural design, as well as material selection and carbon awareness. Through case-studies and built examples, students will recognise and identify building systems and materials, and their use in building construction processes. An awareness of embodied carbon fundamentals and non-conventional structural systems will also be developed. Assessment focuses on the ability to select and explain appropriate architectural materials, simple structural systems and means of construction.
‘Architecture and the Construction Industry’ provides context for students of the architecture profession and the construction industry. This context introduces students to the industry and its key professionals. In addition, students will gain an understanding of current issues related to the built environment, encouraging them to think critically about their response to situations and asking them to consider the moral and ethical consequences of their and others’ decision-making. The third aspect seeks to develop students' professional and employability skills in architecture and design industries.
