Design & Digital Cultures

Design & Digital Cultures is a new research and scholarship cluster that is grounded in architecture, visual arts and digital technology in the broadest sense. While being firmly grounded in architectural culture as well as associated creative and digital practices, it recognises the transformative power of emerging digital cultures in relation to space, media and technologies. It sees its strength in a multidisciplinary, practice-based approach that can give new insights into our understanding of our surroundings and formative spatial cultures, media and technologies.

What kind of scholarship and research is represented in this pathway? Underpinned by a rigorous methodological approach, some scholars in this group will focus on, for instance, analysing the architectural process and its stakeholders, in the creative/critical nexus of space, media and technology in relation to architecture/cities (e.g. photography, film, AR/VR, location-based experiences), others will focus on the theory, methods and innovative application of computational design and fabrication (e.g. digital modelling/simulation, robotics), others will focus on BIM and digital transformation in architecture and construction. Post-graduate students will make a significant contribution to this pathway.

Structure

The LSA Research and Scholarship Pathway will be managed by a small team consisting of Richard Koeck, Marco Iuliano and Asterios Agkathidis, who aim to represent the breadth of the group, spanning across cultural, creative, digital and technology interests. Having this said, the group will operate in an inclusive matter, meaning that it has identified several knowledge areas, each of which will have a pathway lead, ranging from T&R and T&S full-time and even fractional contracts – taking the most inclusive shape. On rotating terms, knowledge leads will be given the responsibility to lead and represent the group (see indicative names/leads).

Knowledge Areas

  1. Design Cultures, Theories and Methods (Marco Iuliano)
  2. Immersive, Real-time and Interactive Environments (Richard Koeck)
  3. Time-Based, Narrative Media Practices (Monika Koeck)
  4. Digital Heritage and Preservation (Nick Webb)
  5. Computational Design, Fabrication & Construction (Asterios Agkathidis)
  6. BIM and Digital Transformation (Adonis Haidar)
