Science
The science addressed by RUEDI underpins all the core sciences (physics, engineering, chemistry, biology and mathematics), providing a unique gateway to new applications. The analytics developed will help users extract the quantitative information they require while the experiment is being performed.
After initial consultation with scientific communities involving academic and industry users, other national facilities and infrastructures and societies, five research themes were identified:
- Biosciences
- Dynamics of chemical change
- Energy generation, conversion and storage
- Materials under extreme conditions
- Quantum materials and processes.
A cross-cutting theme of artificial intelligence (AI) and data science underpins all RUEDI's activities.
These engagement activities continue – see our events page.
-
RUEDI will provide unprecedented capabilities to investigate and understand molecular-scale dynamics in-vivo, in-situ and under operando conditions.
-
The facility will open new perspectives for the control of chemical transformations for research across all science and engineering disciplines.
-
We will investigate the fundamental ultrafast mechanisms that can lead to new sustainable energy technologies and climate friendly systems.
-
RUEDI will provide insight into how materials and devices perform under extremes of temperature, pressure, field and environment.
-
Quantum materials is highly relevant to societally important considerations such as energy generation, storage and transportation.
-
RUEDI will involve artificial intelligence to help maximise the effectiveness of data analytics and machine learning.
