About RUEDI
Ultra-fast science. Global impact.
RUEDI will offer ultrafast measurements for transformative impacts in UK science and technology. These start from achieving atomic and molecular control of the (bio)-chemical interactions that determine each process. The eminent 19th century physicist Lord Kelvin said, “To measure is to know. If you cannot measure it, you cannot improve it”. Here we introduce the vision of a facility centred on unique measurement capabilities.
RUEDI supports multi-disciplinary research through enabling direct observation of dynamic structural and chemical processes in five key scientific areas:
- Biosciences
- Dynamics of chemical change
- Energy generation, conversion and storage
- Quantum materials and processes
- Materials in extreme conditions.
This allows observation of the evolution of structural changes in materials. These can them be determined through time-resolved experiments, rather than by static structure.
These areas are underpinned by a cross-cutting artificial intelligence/data infrastructure theme, bringing together the signal processing expertise that can support development of computational imaging algorithms.
RUEDI will directly contribute to the UK economy by establishing strong links to research infrastructures, national institutes and commercial ventures that drive advances in materials science, engineering and structural biology.
