Year in China

Do you want to have a unique experience and add a new dimension to your degree? Then the Year in China may be for you.

The Year in China is a unique opportunity which allows you to extend your undergraduate degree programme to four years if you are on the traditional three-year programme, or five years if you are on the Year in Industry programme. This programme is on a pass/fail basis and changes your degree title to include 'With a Year in China' upon graduation, making you stand out to employers!

You will be studying at Xi'an Jiatong-Liverpool University (XJTLU) in Suzhou, China where you will study modules related to Chinese history and culture. All courses are taught and assessed in English, and you will also be learning Mandarin so that you can speak and understand to a basic level, meaning there is no need to worry about a language barrier. This fantastic programme gives you the opportunity to live and explore one of the most fascinating and interesting parts of the world and develop an understanding of the culture of one of the largest and fastest growing economies.

*Students can transfer to the Year in China programme in the year prior to going on the programme.

What is the Year in China and what will I study?

The Year in China is an unmissable opportunity to broaden your horizons and gain an understanding of this amazing country. It adds an extra year onto your degree which you will spend at our joint venture university Xi’an Jiaotong-Liverpool University (XJTLU). It’s your chance to study something completely different from your regular field of study.

You will study:

  • Chinese language
  • China studies
  • Depending on your academic department, a module relating to your degree programme.

If you pass the Year in China, your degree title will change to “BA/BSc subject with a Year in China”.

Why go on the Year in China?

  1. The British Council identified Mandarin as the fourth most important language when it comes to the UK’s future.
  2. Studying and living in China is much cheaper than in most other countries.
  3. Stand out from the crowd! Your degree programme will change to “BA Subject with a Year in China”.
  4. Discover dynamic modern China, starting with the ultra-modern XJTLU campus, ony 30 minutes from Shanghai by bullet train.
  5. Learn about ancient China too, XJTLU is located in Suzhou one of the ancient Chinese capitals.
  6. Ensure you take this opportunity to travel around this incredible country and beyond.

When do I go?

Students can either participate in the programme after your second or final year of study. If you go after your final year of study, you complete your Liverpool degree as normal but delay your graduation in order to study in China

The most rewarding element of the course has been the opportunity to study abroad in China. The University of Liverpool has given me experience of living, studying and travelling in a country which is an upcoming economic superpower. Not only will it help with future employment, but it has been a thoroughly enjoyable and enriching time, which I will never forget.
