Applied Conservation Biology

Code: BIOS318

Credits: 15

Semester: Semester 2

This applied module uses research-connected teaching, Geographical Information System (GIS) workshops, and field biology to explore contemporary thinking and practice in conservation biology in a practical setting. Throughout the module, emphasis is placed on evidence-based approaches to conservation and how data gained are used to achieve maximally effective conservation and management. Such skills and principles apply to conservation around the world.

The module is taught via lectures, workshops and non-residential fieldwork, where students will meet site managers and conservation practitioners to apply their understanding of biodiversity conservation.

Students will gain insights into how nature reserves are managed, which will prepare them for employment. They will develop their planning, management and leadership skills in conservation as well as an in-depth knowledge of applying GIS to conservation questions. To support independent learning, students will also be guided to references, primary and secondary sources, listed by staff.

The module is assessed by a GIS competency test and an ecological consultancy- style report

The module is aimed at students studying Zoology. The module will be of interest to students wishing to learn more about conservation biology, including those who wish to pursue a career in conservation or applied ecology, and environmental consultancy. Students will learn from conservationists and habitat managers and develop knowledge and skills in practical habitat management and species conservation, multi-agency working, UK and global legislation, and funding for conservation.
