Commissioning and Production in Contemporary Publishing

This module will analyse the practices and structures of a variety of publishing companies to introduce you to the commissioning and production processes for books and journals and the responsibilities of these departments. You will also receive instruction on the importance of rights and contracts, as well as insights on production and printing processes. Teaching will examine various business models of publishers and their publishing missions, covering trade and academic publishers. By thinking about the different types of publishers and their publications through a wider lens, you will develop your own book or journal proposal, with consideration given to its prospective place in the current market.
