Shaping the professional 2 is the second of four personal professional development modules within the programme. Delivered in semester 2 of year two, this 30 credit module incorporates ten weeks of assessed practice learning, two practice learning opportunities of five weeks in length.
The academic content of the module will further develop the lifelong skills expected of physiotherapists. Skills of reflection and self-evaluation are developed from the Shaping the Professional 1 module, with the continued development of reflective practice to enable effective action planning in response to clinical experiences. The module will utilise on-line learning, simulation, seminars and lectures to support understanding of key professional responsibilities ahead of practice learning. This will incorporate mandatory training prior to practice learning. The academic components will ensure understanding regarding the diversity of practice and specialities within the profession enabling students to maximise opportunities for development whilst in practice. In addition, students will gain exposure to content relating to the wide spectrum of practice, enabling appreciation of the diversity of the clinical settings and populations, the breadth of specialist areas and the varied career pathways available. This breadth and depth of engagement will support future decision making and professional development.
Students undertake a total of ten weeks of practice learning, organised in two, five week blocks, attending four days a week, in a broad range of contemporary NHS, non NHS and social care settings. This enables skill development related to assessment, treatment, and reasoning and students will apply and develop knowledge, and a range of fundamental skills and attributes required for practice. Students receive support and feedback from practice educators and University tutors (usually their academic advisor) to enable continuous development and these experiences allow students to meet the HCPC standards of proficiency,
The module is assessed in two ways; via practice learning reports (25% x 2) that utilise the Common Placement Assessment Form (CPAF) and production of an e-portfolio of CPD evidence including written content involving a critical reflection related to personal and professional development (50%).
Students will be informed that, in exceptional circumstances (e.g. global pandemics), plans for teaching may be subject to change. Contact will be made via the VLE and an e-mail will be sent to each of the students informing them of any changes that prove to be necessary. The Health and Life Sciences FAQSC will be informed in advance of any such changes, so that approval can be given.
