Near-surface geophysics and data science are critical quantitative tools in the geosciences and especially useful for environmental assessment related to construction projects, geohazard mitigation, and pollution mapping. This module will introduce students to environmental geophysics and data science providing integrated training in the application of techniques for surveying sites and handling datasets within the geoscientific, environmental, construction, and engineering sectors. Students will be taught the basic theory underlying several important near-surface geophysical and data science techniques and, working in teams, obtain practical experience of how these are employed. By combining these complementary areas, students taking this module will benefit from developing an integrated understanding of using large datasets derived from measurements made in the field, to solve topical, real-world challenges. They will also develop teamwork skills and benefit from peer-to-peer learning while completing diverse coursework in groups and building confidence for accompanying individual assessments.
