PHYSICS IN PRACTICE II

Code: PHYS222

Credits: 30

Semester: Whole Session

Physics in Practice II offers the chance to apply physics in authentic, real-world contexts; combining hands-on experimentation, computational modelling and open-ended investigation. You will build confidence with modern data-collection tools, analyse results using computational methods, and explore the significance of your findings through both scientific and user-focused perspectives.

The module moves from guided practical challenges into longer investigative projects, including opportunities to specialise in areas such as astronomy, nuclear physics or medical physics, and to work with approaches like simulation and machine learning. You will also develop your communication skills by translating your work into clear and concise reports.

The experience culminates in a group project where you identify a problem that matters to you, design a physics-based solution and communicate it to a wide audience through a webpage, a three-minute explainer video and technical documentation. This project offers a valuable experience of teamwork and entrepreneurial thinking.

Throughout the module, you will develop a portfolio that showcases your problem-solving, experimentation, coding and communication skills-supporting both academic progress and future career ambitions in physics and beyond.
