Physics in Practice III (MPhys)

Code: PHYS334

Credits: 30

Semester: Whole Session

Physics in Practice III (MPhys) develops the investigative and research skills required for advanced study in physics and prepares students for the final-year MPhys research project. Students undertake an independent research investigation that integrates experimental, theoretical and computational approaches to addressing complex physics problems.

The module begins with a shared investigative skills block that develops capabilities in research design, literature review, risk assessment, quantitative modelling, data analysis and scientific reporting. Students then undertake an extended research investigation under academic supervision.

The module also provides a 15-credit BSc-level capstone experience. For students continuing to the MPhys project (PHYS444), the investigation undertaken in this module provides foundational skills to be built upon in the larger year 4 research project.

Students on specialist programmes (such as Physics with Nuclear Science, Physics with Medical Applications, Astrophysics) undertake introductory investigations and research projects aligned with those themes, while students on the main physics programme may select projects from the full range of physics research areas available within the department, depending on available resources.
