Electromagnetism underpins technologies from communications to sensing, and in this module you will use its fundamental theory to analyse how electromagnetic waves and fields behave in complex, realistic physical systems.

You will study wave propagation in free space and materials, investigate how waves interact with boundaries, and analyse systems such as waveguides and transmission lines. The module also introduces relativistic formulations of electromagnetism, revealing deep connections between electromagnetic theory and modern physics.

Learning focuses on tackling complex and unfamiliar problems that require the integration of mathematical techniques and physical insight. You will evaluate the validity and limitations of different models, develop independent approaches to problem-solving, and construct rigorous solutions to advanced problems.
