Through a range of active and authentic learning approaches, including lectures, seminars, tutorials, clinical skills sessions, simulation, and supervised clinical placements, this module introduces students to the investigation, diagnosis and management of concomitant strabismus and amblyopia. It establishes the foundational clinical understanding required for the application of orthoptic principles in practice.
The module forms part of the clinical orthoptic theme that runs throughout the programme alongside ORTH151, ORTH253, ORTH351 and ORTH353. Collectively, these modules support the progressive development of clinical knowledge, practical skills and professional experience essential for contemporary orthoptic practice.
Assessment is undertaken through an unseen 1.5‑hour online written examination, a 1 hour practical examination and a comprehensive e‑portfolio. The e‑portfolio (coursework) includes clinical competency evaluations, documented evidence of clinical experience and educator assessments derived from a four week clinical placement block.
