This module steadily builds knowledge on optics and ophthalmology through three integrated parts. The first part introduces students to the fundamental principles of optics which underpin orthoptic practice and refractive error management. The second part introduces students to ophthalmic disease and its investigation. The third part ensures the student is proficient in the basic practical skills of optical assessment. This module builds the foundation upon which modules in year 2 and 3 will build forming part of the 'Optics and Ophthalmology' theme of the programme. The learning and teaching methods are a combination of lectures, seminars tutorials and clinical skills and the module is assessed by 2x written exams and a clinical competency assessment.
