The ocean is fundamental to life and Earth’s climate. To understand how the ocean works we need to consider the physics of ocean currents, the chemistry of nutrients and the biology of plankton. Then we can see how marine ecosystems are supported and how Earth’s climate operates, and crucially we can look at how this might all change in a warmer world. This module does not require any background in physics, chemistry or biology – we teach you the required core concepts as we need them. We aim to develop a multidisciplinary view of the global ocean, marine ecosystems and the ocean’s role in Earth’s climate though lectures, workshops, and practicals. Assessment is by an assignment based on recent research data we have collected and an exam.
