This module introduces students to the quantitative and analytical skills needed to tackle real-world environmental challenges, with a focus on applications in marine and environmental sciences, using a problem-based approach. Through weekly problem-solving exercises inspired by current research and professional practice, students learn how to analyse data, build simple models, and use computing tools to investigate environmental systems. Workshops, tutorials and PC lab sessions provide hands-on support and allow students to develop confidence in coding, interpretation and scientific reasoning. Assessment combines coursework and exams to encourage creative problem solving, integration of the module’s core concepts and a wider understanding of how scientists use these quantitative skills in their careers. By the end of the module, students will have gained practical, workplace-relevant skills to equip them for the rest of their studies and a deeper understanding of how quantitative approaches are used to address complex environmental problems.
