NUCLEAR BRITAIN: VOICES, ARCHIVES, LEGACIES

Code: HIST353

Credits: 30

Semester: Semester 1

What does it mean to have lived through the nuclear Cold War? This module will begin with an introduction to the social, cultural and political history of the British nuclear age in a global context. Focus will then turn to the lived experience and legacies of the British nuclear testing programme in the 1950s-60s and the subsequent veteran campaigns for nuclear justice which emerged in the 1980s. The second half of the module will move towards an in-depth case study of the recently declassified Merlin database relating to the nuclear test programme which has been catalogued by a team of researchers at Liverpool. Students will complete a research essay based on the clash between official and unofficial versions of the British nuclear age.
