When the United States of America declared its independence from Britain in July 1776, its member states were comprised of thirteen recognisably-British provincial societies. Employing approaches from Digital Humanities research alongside recent trends in the scholarship on colonial North America, this module guides students through an exploration of the socio-cultural development of Britain’s North American colonies. It invites students to uncover the ways in which material goods, ideas, and fashions were used to shape British-American identities within colonial communities, whilst also considering the ways in which these same commodities could become politicised both in support of, and in opposition to, American Independence.
