This module explores the history of Christian visionaries across time and space. Who claims to see the divine—and who is believed? We will investigate why visions occur, what they reveal, and how they are judged credible or dangerous. From late Antiquity to the twentieth century, we examine how mystical experiences intersect with authority, gender, politics, and religion. Are visions acts of resistance or tools of control? How have societies authenticated, celebrated, or silenced visionaries? Tracing change and continuity, students will critically analyse the power—and peril—of seeing the unseen.
