UPPER-INTERMEDIATE GERMAN

Code: GRMN100U

Credits: 30

Semester: Whole Session

This compulsory Y1 language module is mapped against the B2 level of the CEFR. It is designed for students who have an A-level in German or equivalent. Through a variety of learning and assessment activities, students will work towards good competence in reading, writing, listening, speaking and grammar.

Students will work towards the ability to

understand the main ideas of complex text on both concrete and abstract topics;

produce clear, detailed texts on a wide range of subjects and explain a viewpoint on a topical issue;

interact with a degree of fluency and spontaneity that makes regular interaction with German speakers possible without strain for either party;

mediate (e.g. summarise and translate) German text at upper-intermediate level;

Students will do independent project work, e.g. read a book in German, and discuss the process and results in an oral exam.

Students may also benefit from extracurricular activities organised by a native speaker intern, the German Society and a conversation exchange organised through the Language Lounge. It is also the preparation for the following year (GRMN200).
