LANGUAGE AWARENESS: LINGUISTICS FOR LANGUAGE LEARNERS

Code: MODL105

Credits: 15

Semester: Semester 1

The module is an introduction to linguistics, focusing on issues in theoretical and applied linguistics which are relevant for language learners. It aims to equip students with a better awareness of and explicit knowledge about language and language learning. The meta-awareness thus gained will assist in hypothesis testing and rule formation essential to the learning of language.

Students will be introduced to the descriptor levels of natural languages, i.e. phonetics and phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics and pragmatics. Students will become aware of the crucial role that variation plays in natural languages. On this basis, students will be encouraged to explore language learning processes and develop efficient and effective strategies for their language learning, including the critical use of AI.
