This module introduces students to the interdisciplinary field of museology, the study of museums, their history, development, and role in society. It encompasses both the theoretical and practical aspects of museum work and covers numerous elements such as collection management, museum education, exhibition design, conservation and museum ethics.
The module begins with an exploration of the history of museums and foundational museology, establishing key concepts and institutional frameworks. Students will critically engage with Black and decolonial museology, considering how museums can challenge colonial legacies and foster inclusive narratives. The role of museums in shaping national identity is explored through museums and nationalism, while museum and exhibition design will investigate how space and storytelling intersect in curatorial practice.
The module emphasises practical and ethical dimensions of museum work, including socially engaged museum practice, and goes behind the scenes of the museum: looking at museum infrastructures. Curating, collections & co-creating is covered, and students will examine the visual and educational roles of museums through museums & visual culture and museum pedagogy. Finally, the module explores technological innovation through museums, AI & machine learning and emerging museologies, preparing students to critically assess and contribute to the evolving museum landscape.
