This required module is mapped against a B2- level in German according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) and is designed for students who have successfully completed the beginners' module GRMN100B and plan to go abroad in year 3. In four weekly taught hours and independent study it aims to provide students with good competence and knowledge in reading, writing, listening, speaking and grammar, and to enhance those skills throughout the year. Students will acquire and continue practising basic translating skills.
At the end of this module, students taking this module can understand the main ideas of complex text on both concrete and abstract topics, including technical discussions in his/her field of specialisation. They can interact with a degree of fluency and spontaneity that makes regular interaction with native speakers quite possible without strain for either party. They can produce clear, detailed text on a wide range of subjects and explain a viewpoint on a topical issue giving the advantages and disadvantages of various options.
