Rivers shape our landscapes and sustain our ecosystems, yet face unprecedented pressures from climate change and human activity. This module will equip students with the knowledge and skills to understand and manage these systems. Through integrated study of catchment hydrology and fluvial geomorphology, students will explore how water and sediment move through landscapes, examining fundamental processes across spatial and temporal scales. To address real-world environmental challenges, the module will explore emerging river and catchment management approaches that work with natural processes such as Natural Flood Management. Teaching will combine lectures with computer-based practicals and field site visits, providing hands-on experience with data, tools, and contemporary management practices. Assessment through consultancy-style activities will simulate professional roles as hydrologists and geomorphologists, preparing students for employment in environmentally-focused careers with organisations such as the Environment Agency, DEFRA and environmental consultancies.
