The dissertation gives students the opportunity to design and complete an independent research project in geography or environmental science on a topic that reflects their interests and career aspirations. Working under the guidance of an academic supervisor, students will develop and justify a research question, design an ethical methodology, collect and analyse data, and present their findings in a substantial written dissertation. Alongside this, students will produce a research-translation output that communicates the significance of their work to a wider audience, helping them understand how their research can inform policy, practice and public understanding. The module brings together the knowledge, technical skills and critical thinking developed throughout the degree, and gives students scope to apply them in an extended piece of work. By managing a research project from conception to completion, students gain valuable experience in project planning, independent inquiry and professional communication, preparing them for both postgraduate study and a wide range of careers requiring analytical and research expertise.
