This module brings Earth’s history to life by exploring how rocks and fossils record the interplay between life, climate and the planet’s evolving environments. Building on core concepts in sedimentology, stratigraphy and palaeontology, students will explore how sedimentary successions record key events in Earth’s history and examine how patterns of biodiversity and extinction provide evidence for evolution on geological timescales. Through hands on practical workshops and lectures, students will learn to interpret sedimentary successions and fossils to reconstruct Earth’s ancient worlds providing essential context for understanding the challenges of ongoing climate change. This module develops both conceptual understanding and practical skills in observation, interpretation, and scientific communication, as well as strengthening analytical and problem-solving skills valued in Earth and environmental science careers.
