This module explores the way geographers think about and understand the world, through the sets of ideas, perspectives, and methods used to study concepts such as place, space, environment, and human–nature relationships. The module introduces students to current and historical debates about the nature, purpose, and practice of geography. It explores the philosophical and conceptual developments within Geography as a discipline and the production of geographical knowledge, exploring how early geographical thought emerged and shaped a varied and diverse range of disciplines and sub-disciplines that we now study within Geography. On successful completion students should have sufficient knowledge and understanding of change within human and physical environments, enabling them to make informed arguments relating to key challenges within Geography as a discipline, and appreciation of its breadth of approaches and content. The module is delivered through a series of lectures and assessed via a critical essay of a notable Geographer and a written exam.
