This module introduces students to the Earth as a dynamic and interconnected system, exploring how the atmosphere, hydrosphere, cryosphere, lithosphere and biosphere shape global environmental conditions. Through a combination of lectures and guided practical exercises, students examine key processes operating within each sphere and investigate how interactions between them influence oceans, ice-cover, climate, landscapes and ecosystems. Working with real environmental datasets allows students to develop early skills in data handling, graphing and interpretation, helping them understand how scientific evidence is used to examine Earth system behaviour. The assessment encourages students to connect core concepts with analytical practice, supporting both knowledge of large-scale processes and the ability to interpret relationships between different components of the Earth system.
